120 giant projections honor gustav klimt, egon schiele, and contemporary viennese artists

culturespaces — a privately-operating manager of the arts — is announcing the opening of atelier des lumieres for spring 2018, a collection of exhibitions featuring 120 projectors, the work of gustav klimt, a spatialised sound system, and more. located between bastille and nation, in a former foundry in the eleventh arrondissement of paris, the atelier des lumieres will hold monumental immersive exhibitions, with projections covering a total surface area of 3,300 m2.

the goal of such an art center, according to culturespaces president, bruno monnier, is to decompartmentalize: ‘that is why digital technology is so important in twenty-first-century exhibitions. used for creative purposes, it has become a formidable vector for dissemination, and is capable of creating links between eras, add dynamism to artistic practices, amplify emotions, and reach the largest possible audience.’

since 2012, culturespaces has run carrières de lumières; they saw as many as 600,000 people visited their previous program each year. atelier des lumieres hopes to compliment this success with three permanent exhibitions in two areas: la halle and le studio.

in la halle: a never-ending loop of two digital programs. the first, longer, 30-minute program will devote itself to gustav klimt and egon schiele. the shorter program looped-in after the greats will feature another, more contemporary symbol of viennese creativity: friedensreich hundertwasser.

‘thanks to the virtualisation of works of art, we will enable many visitors who have never had the opportunity to visit the secession palace in vienna to behold the iconic figures in klimt’s frescoes’, explains gianfranco iannuzzi, renato gatto, and massimiliano siccardi, the directors responsible for the projections.

in le studio, a third exhibition will hilight emerging artists. it will be entirely contemporary, giving a much-needed carte blanche to digital artists capable of creating worlds. overall, atelier des lumieres will link various eras with an explosion of technology and color — a symphonic journey through the creativity of past and present works. but finally, for those concerned individuals — a clutch-move by the arrangers of the arts; culturespaces will be providing snacks at a bar, at the far end of le studio.
