amsterdam-born photographer and filmmaker, ari marcopoulos‘ exhibition ‘it might seem familiar’ at the foam photography museum in amsterdam, exhibits his work which spans over the last three decades. well-known for his documentation of alternative youth culture in america, the show presents photos of the emerging hip hop and downtown art scene in new york in the 1980s, the snowboard and skate culture in the 1990s as well as frequent depictions of his own family in northern california over the last ten years.

whether his art concerns celebrities or his own family, marcopoulos approaches his subjects in an intuitive manner, characterized by a remarkable feeling of intimacy.
