in the moroccan sahara desert, swiss artist andrea hasler has planted a surrealistic, flesh-like sculpture amongst the golden sand dunes of erg chebbi. ‘perishable goods no5’ is a continuation of hasler’s ongoing investigation of intestinal and bodily forms, following the installment of two site-specific works on a mountain in verbier, switzerland.

presented by next level projects, hasler’s ‘perishable goods no5’ comprises a wooden pallet base and a volume of ‘compressed flesh’ made from wax and resin. bulging and crudely formed as a misshapen square, the pink medium is wrapped in luxury gold chains and a chanel logo.

with the impression of the piece being dropped in the middle of the sahara, the work alludes to the forceful intrusion of global luxury tourism, while simultaneously referencing the need for emergency aid food pallets in disaster zones. with a focus on cultural constructions of power and control, hasler’s work confronts viewers with their own corporeality, questions the global migration crisis, and highlights the ongoing search for identity and belonging.
