in praise of shadows draws on japanese art and filet lacework

Aheneah’s In Praise of Shadows is a textile public artwork which celebrates the interplay between shadows and light, drawing inspiration from Japanese art and the beauty of nature. The intervention sits at the central garden of Oeiras’ Taguspark in Portugal, exploring the harmony between form and transparency.

Taking cues from the delicacy of filet lace, the installation is crafted from an intricate interweaving of ropes. A contemporary interpretation of the traditional textile technique, it evokes wonder and appreciation for the subtle nuances of our surroundings as Aheneah challenges this craft’s potential, beauty, and applicability in bold expressions for the public realm.

In Praise of Shadows was created at the invitation of Taguspark, a technology and science hub in Lisbon. For her concept, Aheneah drew upon her travels through Japan, recalling its rich culture and nature – notably the use of light and shadow in Japanese art and architecture, as well as Jun’ichirō Tanizaki’s book In Praise of Shadows. Shadows, created by natural light, are thus the fundamental element of the work, shaped through its subtle nuances, punctual transparency, and attention to detail.

Throughout the creative process, Aheneah explored different approaches to blend this large-scale artwork, made out of robust and sturdy materials, with the surrounding space. Inspired by the building’s strong lines, the artist combined different proportions in this three-piece set. The strategic positioning between the trees aims to create gateways for contemplation and tranquillity in the heart of the Taguspark Garden.

Transparency became a significant aspect as the work was transformed into a window to the engulfing landscape, intertwining it with the artistic composition. Depending on the time of day or season, visitors will have a unique perspective on the installation’s relationship with its surroundings.
