zaha hadid architects nurnbergmesse expansion: in 2014, zaha hadid architects completed an exhibition hall in nuremberg — a 9,000 square meter building capable of hosting a range of large scale events. developed for nürnbergmesse, one of the world’s largest exhibition companies, ‘hall 3A’ connects the site’s hexagonal grid of halls, which dates back to the 1970s. this sense of connectivity is expressed in the design’s roof structure which spans 75 meters — from the four storey service block at its northern end, to its transparent southern façade.

with record growth in exhibitor and visitor numbers since its completion, nürnbergmesse has now begun construction of ‘hall 3C’, also designed by zaha hadid architects. the scheme will continue the principles already developed by the design team, with a trapezoid-shaped, 10,000 square meter floor plan that varies in length from 95 to 145 meters. an inclined roof will offer acoustic benefits as well as reductions in energy consumption and emissions, while 3,000 square meters of glazed façades will enable natural light to penetrate deep into the hall.

with the construction of the new hall 3C by zaha hadid architects, we will again implement their ideas into reality,’ said the CEOs of nürnbergmesse, dr roland fleck and peter ottmann. ‘by realizing this design by zaha hadid architects we build 10,000 square meters of exhibition future for nuremberg.’

deputy chairman of nürnbergmesse, dr markus söder, bavaria’s state minister of finance, land development & home, added: every year, around 15,000 full-time jobs are supported by events and investments in the exhibition center nuremberg. this new Hall 3C is an expression of the economic capacity of the exhibition and congress venues in nuremberg.’

the €70 million scheme is scheduled to complete at the end of 2018. see designboom’s previous coverage of hall 3A here.
