zaha hadid architects designs new metro stations for dnipro

zaha hadid architects has revealed the latest images of its dnipro metro project as construction begins in the ukrainian city. the scheme encompasses three new underground stations—teatralna, tsentalna and muzeina—, which are planned to open for service in 2025.

the project forms part of an ongoing plan to upgrade dnipro’s public transport network. the new stations will extend the existing metro line by 4km and connect businesses, cultural and academic institutions in the east with the city center and the dnipro-holovnyi railway terminus. the extension also aims to reduce traffic congestion and enable the parks, beaches and recreational facilities on the banks of dnipro river in the east of the city to be easily accessed from the center.

the entrance pavilions of the new metro stations designed by zaha hadid architects feature fluid shapes and a steel construction as a nod to dnipro’s engineering, metallurgy and manufacturing traditions.

comprising a family of thin structural shells designed to be constructed in recycled steel from dnipro’s local foundries, the pavilions’ sculpted forms showcase the city’s expertise in steel craftsmanship. each entrance pavilion is situated within a new public plaza and provides an easily recognizable landmark indicating access to the city’s metro.

the design of the ticket halls is unique to each station while the interior concourses, corridors and platforms share a cohesive formal and spatial logic that gives the dnipro metro a strong identity.

defined by concepts of intuitive navigation, the interiors are designed to orientate and direct passengers through each station while enhancing their experience to ensure safe, comfortable and enjoyable transport across the city.
