yo yamagata composes shifted volumes for FW house in tokyo

yo yamagata architects has completed the single family residence titled FW house in tokyo, japan. the design is composed of three building volumes which shift to create an irregular composition and openings for daylight and ventilaiton to the central living area. the arrangement features two upper level outdoor terraces, which are walled on their exterior for privacy from neighboring dwellings.

on the exterior, the structure is distinguished by a protruding volume on the upper level which is clad in dark-stained wood. the house’s main mass gently contrasts this with a dark-blue color. the dwelling’s interior spaces blend into one another, and are organized around a central living and kitchen area. from here, a high-stepping and open tread staircase accesses an upper mezzanine.
