in the heart of amsterdam’s red light district, architecture office XML has designed a store saturated in white decor. the core element of the scheme is a 9-meter long translucent bar containing 28 tube lights that creates a bright, glowing volume amidst the distinct hue of crimson that defines the area. behind this bar, the details of the decor transcend the walls and countertops to be projected onto the staff’s clean lab coats. the employees offer health information to visitors as they explain the two products for sale in the shop – water and vitamin drinks, which are displayed on long shelves of folded metal with integrated lighting. a mirror at the end of the boutique visually doubles the small space of the dutch souterrain, an underground gallery dating back to the 17th century. the approach is one of the first steps of the gradual transformation process of the area towards a more diverse and balanced neighborhood.
