it has been announced that construction at zaha hadid‘s afragola station in napoli is set to resume later this year. the project, first unveiled in 2003, was put on hold in february 2012 after budget concerns. however, after a recent meeting of the RFI (rete ferroviaria italiana), the company who own italy’s railway network, it has been decided that the scheme may come to fruition after all.

the new station complex will be situated three kilometers north of the city center and is envisaged as both a contemporary landmark and at catalyst for the future redevelopment of the area. the architectural language of the scheme represents an appropriate sense of movement though its dynamic use of concrete and glass.

the project will form a gateway to naples, a modern transport interchange which will connect the city through long awaited TAV high-speed rail links. the primary concept for the design features an extended bridge which reaches across all railway lines forming a pedestrian passage which connects either side of the station.
