The Floating Box House hovers over a 500 sqm plot

Tel-Aviv-based Israelevitz Architects takes over the construction of a two-story residential building that shapes a floating cube enclosed by a wooden post system. Located in the center of Gedera, Israel, the house covers a 500 sqm plot arranging interior and exterior patios throughout the site allowing the built form to correspond with the outdoors in a unique manner. The ground floor remains open and transparent through a series of large glazed partitions. The public space is centered by a generous patio, which is effectively the heart of the house. The courtyard separates the living room from the kitchen, forming a U-shaped development. The permeable formation generates a seamless cohesion between the house’s indoor and outdoor spaces, letting the natural element penetrate the structure and the middle of the living room. The other side of the volume sets the kitchen area in direct contact with the patio with thick vegetation bursting inside the zone.

nature invades the interior of the house

The upper story, containing the master suite, is effectively supported by recessed steel columns making up the contour of the shell. The staircase stands as a dominant element of the construction, using a black banister made of natural metal sheeting, with a minimalist design that lends weight to the space and effectively functions as an artistic element. The upper story appears to be completely sealed off from the outside but is effectively aired using wooden slots. The top level forms another patio that connects the master suite directly to the surrounding nature. The separation of the master suite from the bathroom is achieved by a glass partition. The upper volume arranges a guestroom facing the open patio. The second story is effectively a cube, made of wooden posts that surround the structure. According to the design team at Israelevitz Architects, ‘this is a powerful but restrained cube’, while ‘the aim was to create a mysterious inner world’ that corresponds to the surrounding natural elements.
