an elongated counter connects people within đóm coffee shop
đóm is a small corner café designed by the bloom, that incorporates different materials and shapes to generate an intimate and cozy atmosphere. located in bao loc city, vietnam, a long rectangular counter penetrates đóm’s wall, enhancing the visual contact between inside and outside, promoting peoples’ interaction. furthermore, a massive corrugated iron roof — composed of two layers to ensure heat insulation and noise reduction — is extended with the support of thin wooden beams, creating a semi-open area that invites passers-by to come in.

how to bring people together in a private space?
the đóm’s owner asked for a ‘moderate’ shop with many plant pots among a spacious open patio, and enough space to share his coffee experiences. the bloom sought to elongate the spaces and shapes in an attempt to join the inside with the outside, while a sliding door system creates a more flexible layout, improving the shop’s accessibility.
arched openings, curved angles, and recessed walls, in combination with pops of green, add a playful touch to the structure, inviting visitors to rest their minds, interact and share their stories. meanwhile, scattered light dots resembling small fireflies, are hidden on the old corrugated iron ceiling, ‘illuminating and opening up, stories, sad and happy from seemingly unfamiliar guests are sitting together.’
