vazio S/A rests concrete home amid the brazilian landscape

based on one of brazil’s seven biomes that covers an area of over 1 million square kilometers, the cerrado holds around a third of all brazilian diversity. set inside this abundant ecosystem is ‘the cerrado house’ designed by vazio S/A which has been built at the foothills of the sierra da moeda. the three-bedroom residence features a rooftop pool and terrace, while the rooms underneath overlook the sierra.

the belo horizonte-based architect describes the scheme as ‘the play between function and form here is spontaneous and undogmatic: the ramps and stairs of the swimming pool are stamped irrepressibly onto the façades and shape the internal space.’ constructed of mainly concrete, the home rests on the natural terrain of the landscape – with aims to blend into the delicate landscape as possible. inside, glass planes protected by folding timber doors open the spacious living spaces to the greenery outside.

‘the soils of the cerrado were once regarded as too acidic to farm. but since agronomists began applying industrial quantities of lime in the 1980s, these soils have been transformed. the cerrado now produces 70% of brazil’s agricultural output.

in recent years, the rate of ecological destruction of the cerrado has been twice that of the amazon, and while the majority of the amazon rainforest survives, more than 60% of the cerrado’s former 200 million hectares has disappeared under the plough, and most of that within the last two decades alone.’
