URBANUS completes SHUM YIP UpperHills LOFT in shenzhen

URBANUS has completed a mixed-use complex in china that comprises a range of apartments, offices, and even a theater. the project forms part of a high-end commercial complex, adjacent to shenzhen’s central business district, which also boasts a pair of skyscrapers designed by SOM. responding to the scale of the towers, the design team created a series of ‘artificial mountain volumes’ that echo the form of the surrounding topography. in doing so, the architects have established a small town connected with quiet sidewalks.

officially named ‘SHUM YIP UpperHills LOFT’, the development’s larger venues mediate between the scale of the skyscrapers and the intimate network of pedestrian passageways. the URBANUS-designed scheme comprises a shopping mall, offices, and apartments, creating a new neighborhood which integrates residents, business, retail, and culture.

the development is divided into four sectors. zone A is a residential block that contains loft apartments, each with a private courtyard for socialization. in zone B, a hotel and office space enclose an inner garden, while a black box theater is capable of hosting cultural events. the C district hosts more than 20 three- to four-storey offices which form a small village community at the center of the site. D, the final zone, takes the form of another ‘mountain’ and contains a large exhibition center.
