LKSA combines Red Brick and Granite on BLDG.B’s facade

BLDG.B is a mixed-use building developed by LKSA architecture firm as an income-generating property within a designated housing site development district in Korea. The structure consists of a ground floor allocated for neighborhood facilities, two floors accommodating four rental housing units, and a fourth floor with an attic serving as the client’s residence.

The corner site influenced the volumetric composition, resulting in a massing approach shaped by its spatial context. The ground level incorporates bright granite to create a visual contrast with the red brick mass above. This material continuity extends to the podium, window sills, and lintels, introducing a structured rhythm to the facade. The combination of red brick and granite was designed to establish both stability and variation in texture and materiality.

BLDG.B sets up a polygonal sharp-edged volume

The building’s form incorporates polygonal elements, with a pitched roof that integrates vertical displacements and sharp-edged surfaces. LKSA’s architectural team follows this approach to emphasize geometric articulation, giving the structure a distinct spatial identity. Given its corner location, the design prioritizes multi-directional elevations, balancing internal spatial functions with strategic openings on the facade.

To enhance the contrast between the materials, granite detailing is applied above and below the windows, creating a visual transition against the heavier texture of red brick. The piloti columns and walls feature rounded edges matching the warmth of the red brick, while variations in window placement and dimensions establish a structured yet dynamic rhythm across the elevation. Despite the constraints of the housing site development district, the project is designed to accommodate diverse living experiences while maintaining a cohesive architectural language.
