AtelierM’s Shire is born from city-dwellers seeking a deeper connection with nature, leveraging this concept to create a harmonious living space in Buenos Aires. The concept draws on the orientation of the human body in relation to our surroundings, as defined by geometry. By transforming a linear bar into a full circle, the residence integrates indoor and outdoor environments, providing inhabitants with a range of engaging spaces that embrace panoramic views across various levels. Additionally, Shire produces its own energy, water, and food, transforming over time into a self-sufficient haven.

atelierm articulates encircling spaces

‘Just like the human body, the way we position ourselves in relation to our surroundings is defined by our orientation. It’s not the same to be in front of something, than to be staring from a rotated angle,’ notes the team at AtelierM. As seen in Shire, it becomes clear that geometry guides the articulation of spaces. The project was developed when the owners, after living for a long time in the city in very few square feet, were in search for a new lifestyle away from the city. Their new living space thus looks to generate connection with exteriors, and to create different situations and sceneries, all in relation with nature.

The architectural concept is divided into a two-step process. Firstly, a linear bar, which accommodates the program was divided and flexed until both ends were joined to form a full circle — one without vertices, without limits. With the parametrization of the geometry, they began to discover the articulation between spaces and the rest of the land, the mixture of geometry and nature creating a new dimension of an ascending path as an extension. Thus, constructing a new space to inhabit, in another level and with panoramic views.
