translucent volumes encircle a core courtyard at this multi-generational home in bangkok

aurs studio fosters connectivity at aur aree house

A series of solid yet translucent volumes are stacked to shape the Aur Aree House, a multi-generational dwelling that embraces the essence of togetherness and connected living. Thai practice Aurs Studio was tasked with accommodating an extended family who wished to leave behind their small family home in a tranquil suburb of Bangkok. As such, the home was conceived as an extension with an emphasis on communal spaces to foster family activities, while ensuring a strong connection between the old and new structures.

The result is a series of enclosed, open, and semi-external spaces that enhance circulation while balancing privacy and interconnectedness. Amid the volumes, an intimate courtyard punctuated with a tree at its core provides shade for the roof terraces and rooms, further reinforcing the bond between the old and new structures and imbuing a warm, serene ambiance.

wrapped in a perforated translucent shield

Aur Aree House’s exterior facade exudes a duality, composed of a series of cuboids that harmoniously align with the sun’s orientation, its contextual surroundings, and functional needs. A double-layered, perforated metal sheet acts as a translucent shield, simultaneously offering privacy while mitigating thermal energy from the south and east. Upon entering the home, guests are greeted by a semi-external entrance that exudes warmth, enclosed by a central courtyard which filters natural ventilation and abundant sunlight through the space. A small tropical garden on the side augments this effect, immersing occupants in a serene oasis.

Aurs Studio (more here) has strategically positioned the living space behind the central courtyard, allowing the family members to maintain visual contact as they move through the house. This core area, predominantly occupied by the elder family members, serves as a gathering space that integrates living, dining, and working areas, encouraging a strong sense of connection and interaction. Despite the unified communal spaces, each individual bedroom has been tailored to its inhabitant’s preferences, reflecting their unique personality through the use of distinct colors and textured materials.
