FORM / Kouichi Kimura builds hilltop house of ‘extraordinariness’

Boasting panoramic views of the mountainous Shiga landscape in Japan, ‘Hilltop House’ by FORM / Kouichi Kimura Architects takes shape as an all-white arrangement of overlapping volumes. The geometric residence occupies 830 sqm with private courtyards making the best use of the suburban location and tranquil water basins creating mesmerizing visuals. Both the exterior and interior of the dwelling were meticulously planned to respond to the needs and likings of the client who has specifically asked for  ‘extraordinariness’.

courtyard house with mountainous views

The house by FORM / Kouichi Architects (see more here) is built on top of a hill that was generated during land development at the foot of the mountain. Upon approaching the site, individuals meet a forest-like path that is concealed with branches and steers away from the main road, leading to the main entrance of the residence.

The client has asked the architects to design an environment that can provide extraordinariness in everyday living while making the best use of the location. Therefore, the team planned a courtyard house that opens generously toward the mountainous scenery, offering striking natural views. The building is composed of large horizontally-emphasized volumes accompanied by a wall that surrounds the courtyard. The height of the wall was determined so as to allow occupants to view the great mountain ridges from the rooms.

water basin provides delicate visuals

The residence is designed to blend harmoniously into the surroundings, making itself part of the topography and further raising the scenic value of the location. Its graveled courtyard is formed as a blank space, with no planted areas. With the background landscape as the borrowed scenery, occupants feel like they are within an extended tranquil space. Each individual room utilizes clear sightlines and natural light, creating a continuous space while loosely segmented. The house that appears tranquil but fluid will continue to produce fresh and extraordinary space experiences in daily life.

To produce extraordinariness, under the eaves of the house, the architects have installed a water basin facing the courtyard. The landscape is reflected on the water along with natural light, shade, and nearby objects, creating delicate rippling visuals.
