Krasnyk House draws from traditional Ukrainian architecture

Designers Alina Sanina & Serhii Gubar turn to the origins of local ‘Hutsul’ architecture to construct a small cottage standing in the heart of the Carpathians, in the Ukrainian countryside. Located in the village of Krasnyk, Verkhovyna district, Ivano-Frankivsk region, the structure forms a two-leveled house drawing from the vernacular architecture and cultural design elements of the area to preserve the proportions and distinct features of the traditional wooden buildings. Simple and concise the construction applies modern and durable materials to put up a cozy village house that meets the needs of rural living and boosts the development of the infrastructure and tourism in the region. The plot lies in the lowlands on the steep relief of the area facing south providing the planted cottage with a panoramic view of the Carpathian Mountains. The volume borrows the shape of a customary roof protecting the ‘Krasnyk house’ from snow in the winter and scorching sun in summer. The wood-sewn end of the gable forms a triangular large glazed window.

cottage splits functions between a ground and an attic level

The planning by the architectural duo is defined by conciseness throughout the layout of the interior. The cottage divides the functions into two levels arranging mainly common zones to the ground floor, and private areas to the upper layer. A common kitchen-living room sets up a fireplace and opens up an exit to the outdoor terrace, while a large bedroom resides in a more intimate zone combined with a bathroom. A non-standard staircase solution provides storage space under the unit serving as a technical pantry. The upper attic level organizes a bedroom overlooking the surrounding mountainous landscape through a triangular skylight. Technical rooms with remote ventilation systems are developed under the roofing system. The residence’s main feature throughout the design is the refined blending of modern and local traditional architecture.
