the disco volante roof top bar, designed by tony owen partners sydney and developed by the austino group, is the latest addition to the city’s rooftop nightlife scene. the bar sits atop the 10 story nelson house in clarence street in sydney’s central business district. the nelson house is an iconic heritage building; it was sydney’s first steel frame high rise building with a characteristic classical facade.

the designers added a two-story rooftop that contains a restaurant and bar with outdoor dining. the minimalist design includes an open plan space with a central free-form bar and loose seating. it consists of a glass box for public areas and a masonry box for services replacing the existing plant element. the glass box is shaded by a pattern of disc-shaped aluminum shading devices. the disks have been designed using a parametric software to maximize solar protection at different times of the day. this results in an undulating pattern resembling a sculpture piece that crowns the building.
