conceived by dutch designer marc van vliet, ‘tiny module’ is a housing concept that minimizes its ecological footprint and prioritizes freedom of choice for its inhabitants. the system is made up of cake slice-shaped living modules measuring 7.5 m2 each. when put together, the tiny modules become a low-impact home that blends into its environment.

with tiny module, residents can choose the size and configuration of their compact dwelling. the modules can be linked in several ways to create a range of playful shapes: straight, curved, meandering, or even a circle. inhabitants can also decide how the house looks by choosing an exterior cladding material. a sedum roof comes as standard, but this surface can also be covered with different materials.

the concept offers freedom of size, shape, and appearance

the final houses are raised 60 cm above ground level on a screw foundation and the modules are interconnected by a floating path. in this way, the small buildings can be removed without any traces left behind. for every exterior wall, there is the choice between a closed wall or a window frame and/or door.

interior walls can be positioned by residents, affording maximum freedom when designing the space. the plumbing is located in one module and comes in a few variations, with one wall containing the connections for the kitchen. as a result, all technical connections are concentrated in one module.

the housing system is designed based on a timber frame construction, using natural materials for construction and insulation. dwellings can be connected to utilities but can also be built ‘off-grid’. the modules are delivered in parts, meaning up to five modules can be transported at the same time to reduce carbon emissions.
