positioned at the center of the university of guiana campus, rh+ architecture has developed a library building entirely enclosed within a timber lattice. the wooden frame allows the building to open up to the rest of the site, while a ‘gallery’, the peripheral space situated between the lattice and the concrete core of the building provides an additional area of congregation. located in cayenne, the capital of french guiana, the spacious design forms a a distinctive physical and social symbol for the region and its people.

after passing through the gallery threshold, the library is reached through a double door entrance that opens towards an expansive foyer, containing a waiting area, a reception and bathrooms. it is then possible to directly access the lending desk, the press room or the temporary exhibitions gallery. two patios bring natural light into the core of the structure, connecting the public and private areas of the design. at the upper level, spaces are dedicated for individual consultation with work cubicles offering views of the large library floor below. additionally, an autonomous volume contains multimedia training facilities as well as an exhibition hall.

protecting occupants from the region’s intense heat, the double-skin façade also increases visual comfort, minimizing glare and ensuring that diffused light spreads in a homogeneous manner. acoustically, a soundproof ceiling, and the insulation of flooring, ensures a calming and tranquil atmosphere. throughout the design, wide reception spaces and diverse reading and research zones provide open and engaging internal volumes.
