timber-clad residence settles on stilts within raintree forest in thailand

Sher Maker’s Jomthong Raintree House integrates with nature

Designer Sher Maker builds Jomthong Raintree House within a lush Chamchuri, raintree, forest in Chom Thong district, Chiang Mai, integrating it with its natural surroundings. Positioned along the edge of a three-acre plot, the residence serves as a quiet observatory of the surrounding ecosystem, with minimal intervention to preserve its innate beauty.

The architectural approach of the Jomthong Raintree House is rooted in simplicity, featuring a gabled roof and RC concrete structures executed by a local builder team. The building’s walls, crafted from locally sourced Shorea wood encased in timber batten, serve as a subtle division fence while allowing for unobstructed views of the natural landscape.

elevated open-layout House Serves as a Nature Observatory

With a commitment to maintaining the natural flow of the land and allowing community access to the nearby stream, the design team incorporates open walls that enable air, wind, and soundscapes from the surrounding environment to permeate the space. This thoughtful integration ensures residents can fully immerse themselves in the sights and sounds of nature.

The layout of the Jomthong Raintree House is practical and efficient, with the main hallway leading to the bedrooms and living room. The family’s living space, strategically situated on the sloping terrain, offers privacy without sacrificing views of the Chamchuri forest and Doi Inthanon mountain range. An observation deck at the end of the bridge provides a serene vantage point for experiencing the natural beauty, particularly during the tranquil moments before sunset.

Beyond its role as a peaceful retreat, the observatory space of the Jomthong Raintree House is designed to accommodate a variety of family activities, ensuring its relevance and functionality for years to come.
