an interactive garden pavilion with movable parts

Michael Jantzen’s interactive garden pavilion serves as a versatile garden retreat, meditation space, and shade house. Constructed from sustainably grown stained wood, the pavilion features an octagonal support frame covered by thirty slatted, hinged panels. These panels can be adjusted in multiple positions along the support frame—up, down, or side to side—allowing the structure’s appearance and functionality to be customized according to the user’s needs.

Michael Jantzen’s Versatile and Modular Interactive Pavilion

The movable panels facilitate the regulation of airflow and sunlight within the pavilion, offering the ability to create varying degrees of privacy. The structure’s interior includes two benches with adjustable backrests, suitable for both seating and reclining.

Designed by Los Angeles-based architect, Michael Jantzen,  as a modular system of prefabricated parts, the pavilion’s size can be easily altered by expanding or reducing the original components or connecting additional structures side by side to form larger clusters. The small size and nature of the pavilion typically eliminate the need for a foundation or building permit, enhancing its ease of installation.
