A Threshold builds Terra Comb in india

Situated in a lively Bangalore neighborhood in India, Terra Comb is a service apartment designed by the local architectural firm A Threshold. The residential spacewith terracotta emphasizes both comfort and sustainability, catering primarily to students and professionals. Despite the urban constraints like crowded surroundings and limited space, the architectural layout cleverly integrates interconnected volumes and internal courtyards to maximize natural light indoors. Sections of the building’s facade are adorned with a perforated structure crafted from reclaimed Mangalore ridge tiles. Over time, this framework transforms into a green veil as climbing plants gradually grow, bringing a touch of nature all year round. The protective screen serves practical purposes such as shielding the interiors from the sun, as well as providing acoustic insulation, and offering a visual barrier.

a model for sustainable buildings in the urban fabric

Sourced from a nearby factory, the tiles are cut into 45-degree profiles and assembled within a framework of mild steel plates at regular intervals, forming a buffer around the structure. Inspired by traditional methods of cooling,  Terra Comb by A Threshold incorporates a screen that operates on the principle of evaporative cooling. Similar to the cooling effect of water jugs in summer, this screen is integrated with a drip irrigation system. This system efficiently waters planter boxes while gently sprinkling water on terracotta tiles, effectively maintaining a refreshing indoor temperature. The lush vegetation grown along the façade fosters a biodiverse environment, attracting wildlife and setting an example for sustainable urban living.
