tabanlıoğlu architects designs women's community and production center in rural turkey

istanbul-based firm tabanlıoğlu architects has envisioned a women’s community center for bayburt, a rural province of 60,000 people in the north-east of turkey. designed to empower and unite different generations of women through communal production, the space serves as a place of congregation where visitors are able to share experiences and practices.

currently under construction, the hüsame köklü women’s community and production center is funded by the BAKSI foundation of arts and culture. tabanlıoğlu architects’ design reacts to the region’s harsh weather conditions with a welcoming yet protective structure. ‘the building responds to the climatic and geographical conditions of the region and concretely puts them into a humble, functional, and harmonious monolithic entity,’ explain the architects.

a private courtyard is organized around a single tree

in order to quickly shed snowfall, the building features a series of steep roofs that also divide the structure into smaller, less imposing volumes. meanwhile, the structure’s board formed concrete façades enclose a private garden, organized around a single tree. the community center’s internal spaces are left deliberately simple and flexible, allowing its users to customize the venue according to their specific needs.
