architectural designer milad eshtiyaghi envisions a house suspended precariously off the edge of a cliff. while many dwellings celebrate their natural context by integrating into the landscape, the ‘suspended house’ emphasizes the beauty of its rugged site by entirely disconnecting from it. while the house respectfully maintains a minimized footprint on the land, it generates a sublime atmosphere of fear and excitement, as the occupant is faced with the pure experience of living atop a cliff. the designer images the house for northern california‘s coastal region of mendocino.

designer milad eshtiyaghi organizes the ‘suspended house’ into two primary elements — the dwelling and the mast. the mast is the necessary structural element which supports the house, by way of a set of tension cables that support the dwelling. the house is tethered to the mast by way of two sets of these cables. the higher set bears the weight of gravity while the lower set withstands lateral and upward wind forces.

while milad eshtiyaghi’s suspended house hosts a conditioned interior, a secondary area hangs below and is left open to the elements. with this exposed living space and its glass floor, the architectural designer seeks to exaggerate the feeling of airy weightlessness, but also the feeling of fear. this space is accessed by way of a narrow and elevated footbridge, again defined by its glass floor. at once visitors realize that the house is designed for those adventure seekers who are not faint of heart.
