san francisco based practice, studio O+A has completed tech company, AOL’s new headquarters in palo alto, california. looking to create an environment which fosters collaboration, interaction and idea generation, the space features a distinctly open plan where communal work areas dominate. the existing space – unequivocally 1980s with drop ceilings, carpet and tight cubicles – was stripped back to its bare structure, leaving a clean white shell with exposed industrial ceilings and concrete floors. raw, unfinished materials such as OSB board and corrugated fiberglass contrast the more refined surfaces and structured lines, adding an element of lightheartedness and casualty to the corporate headquarters.

located at the core of the structure is a large, bright space dubbed ‘the town hall’. designed to promote a cross-pollination of ideas, the main area houses a multitude of functions that brings together staff from a variety of departments. modeled after late-night eateries in san francisco’s mission district, the part kitchen, part play space is characterized by its bright colors, plentiful light and home-like furniture choices. a series of enclosed meeting areas scatter through the space, implemented as a means of dividing the vast unit. the pod-like environments – each different in organization and arrangement – convey a relaxed mid-century aesthetic which aims to support spontaneity and informal creativity.
