designed by studio gang, ’40 tenth avenue’ — the building formerly known as the ‘solar carve tower’ — has topped out in new york. the 10-floor commercial building is under construction in the meatpacking district, in close proximity to the high line. developed through studio gang’s ongoing research into tall buildings, incident angles of the sun’s rays sculpt the building’s form — preventing it from casting unwelcome shadows.

developed by aurora capital and william gottlieb real estate, studio gang’s design for 40 tenth avenue features a dramatic curtain wall that accentuates its chiseled form. containing class-A commercial space, tenants will be afforded panoramic views and over 20,000 square feet of outdoor space. this includes a 10,000 square foot shared roof deck, 8,000 square foot second floor outdoor space adjacent to the high line, and eight floors with private outdoor space.

in addition, the 139,000 square foot building has more than 40,000 square feet of retail space featuring a generous frontage on 10th avenue and ceiling heights that reach more than 17 feet in some prime spaces. ‘the design uses the angles of the sun to carve back parts of the building, specifically to the garden,’ jeanne gang told designboom in a 2016 interview. the building topped out on april 12, 2018 and is slated for completion in march 2019. see designboom’s previous coverage of the project here.
