Studio Gameiro renovates Palmeira Apartment in lisbon

In Lisbon’s Príncipe Real neighborhood, Palmeira Apartment by Studio Gameiro offers a dynamic blend of historical charm and contemporary design. The design team sought to revive the late 19th-century craftsmanship while infusing modern elements. Collaborating with local artisans, they crafted bespoke pieces seamlessly integrated into the residential space. ‘These skilled craftsmen fashioned bespoke pieces using natural materials in a sustainable manner, creating tailor-made solutions that felt they had been there from the start,’ shared the designers. The result offers a comfortable and elegant living experience that honors tradition while introducing innovative elements.‘By erasing the blemishes and boundaries of the original (old) and the new features, we sought to create something that respected where it came from but which also broke new ground, crafting a modern living experience that exudes an elegant and comfortable ambiance’.

Harmonizing Functionality and Style in Palmeira Apartment

Throughout the renovation, preserving the neighborhood’s character remained a priority for the architects, allowing each room to establish its unique character. The kitchen, designed as a gathering space, balanced functionality, and aesthetics to foster culinary activities and social interactions. Different elements in the kitchen, from neutral-toned functional components to granite countertops, were used as storytelling canvases. The lower cabinets feature a simple grid of drawers made of oak with a brushed varnish finish, matching well with the granite stone countertops and backsplash sourced from Canada. The natural patterns in the granite add a lively touch to the space, complementing the wave-shaped cuts in the backsplash, which symbolize the conversational atmosphere during shared meals.

The renovation didn’t just focus on aesthetics; it was also committed to eco-friendliness and air quality enhancement. From stripping layers of the past to applying lime-based plaster, the process prioritized sustainability. ‘We diligently constructed a robust and eco-friendly foundation, meticulously applying lime-based plaster, evoking the time-honored techniques and expertise of that era.’ This not only resulted in a smooth matte finish but also helped in preventing fungi and purifying the indoor air. Inspired by the shapes found in the garden, the fireplace design incorporates white and red travertine for its base. The fireplace’s hut, made from lacquered metal, allows hot air to flow efficiently and is designed to stand out from the wall, creating a connection with other ornamental details found throughout the house.

To integrate the garden’s natural beauty indoors, various elements were introduced, each highlighting nature’s organic, free-flowing forms. The natural stone steps echo the fireplace base in both their organic shape and material, creating a coherent visual connection. The pool’s construction involved precise attention to detail, with each tile individually designed and 3D modeled to suit the pool’s features. The tile color is a blend of cobalt blue and blue Klein to represent water naturally, while the textured tiles create a calm atmosphere ideal for relaxation.
