in designing the office headquarters of thai technology company macrocare in bangkok, Stu/D/O architects has developed a building of interlocking masses and tilting planes with various green pockets that visually connect nature with interior spaces. a large void in the form of a internal courtyard is located in the center of the building, which not only acts as a central green space, but also draws the eye towards this large open space where social connection and interaction occurs within the company.all images courtesy of Stu/D/O architects
within the architecture of interlocking masses and tilting planes of the macrocare office headquarters, Stu/D/O architects seeks to reflect the character of a trusting technology company and its motto of ‘trusted connection’. by subtracting a volume from the large mass of the building, the architects have created a void within the very center, which serves as an internal courtyard where visual connections within the different functions occur, as each programmatic space looks out into this large outdoor atrium.
the front façade of the building has been closed off with aluminum panels to block the harsh sun rays that hit the west-facing site, while perforated details and openings offer self-shading and ventilation. the central void, located in the middle of the largely dense mass, enables natural light, wind, and greenery to exist within the various programs of the headquarters, as they all face inwards towards the atrium. other green pockets have been added within the building, namely small courtyards on the second and fourth floors that connect to the gallery, innovative space, and workshop area, in aim of giving a better quality of work-life for the employees and main users of the building.
by the entrance, Stu/D/O has placed a reflecting pond that uses the same pattern as the façade panels but shifts and tilts slightly to create subtle effects when the water and light filter through. the narrow bridge crossing the reflecting pond, the randomly arranged columns on the deck that mimic tree trunks, and the perforated pattern canopy that filters subtle natural light give the entrance an ambience that resembles nature, but in very distinctly modern materials and environment. in the evening, the perforated pattern canopy cast shadows onto the showroom, creating a digital translation of the natural tree canopy; a unique experience for the visitors of macrocare.
