wooden ‘House Tjurpannan’ stands next to the swedish open sea

Architectural firm HelgessonGonzaga designs a private weekend retreat located at the coastal Natural Reserved area Tjurpannan, in west Sweden. ‘House Tjurpannan’ sets up a wooden structure resembling that of a cabin, exposing the housing unit to the open sea. Paying close attention to topography, the project follows a traditional design approach concerning the architectural direction and the importance of natural elements in the construction. Structural and material expression is defined by rustic elements and austere character, shaping the house as a ‘luxurious camping resort’, shares the team.

spatial organization forms on a grid of wooden structures

The first encounter with the house is achieved through an old stone wall, where a path leads the way to the entrance through the natural surrounding landscape. Positioned where the terrain flattens out, the plot introduces the Natural Reserved area unfolding toward the greenery and open sea. The spatial organization is derived from a grid of wooden structures, directly anchored in the rock. The house by Swedish firm HelgessonGonzaga offers basic living functions for spontaneous and temporary use. The construction approach stands pragmatic, with the overall volume forming a typical structural grid made of standard wooden elements found in the local hardware store. The temporary residence displays dark natural tones throughout, as all external wooden surfaces are treated with tar and the interior arrangement is stained dark brown framing the natural scenery. The spatial boundary of the house expands through the application of large glass openings connecting the living areas to the exterior context.
