sou fujimoto has just won the 2013 marcus prize, which is biennially awarded to a promising architect with a decade of leadership in the field by the marcus corporation foundation and the university of wisconsin-milwaukee school of architecture and urban planning (UWMSARUP). based on the place-making character of his works, the 41-year-old architect was chosen to receive the $100,000 endowment. founded in 2000, sou fujimoto architects is known for delicate structures and sculptural spaces across a wide range of scales. fujimoto often reframes and brilliantly subverts spatial typologies, most recently the 2013 serpentine pavilion in london and a home in osaka with thickened, crescent-shaped roof. as part of the award, he will run a graduate studio at the university, and give public lectures and workshops to enhance milwaukee’s growth and development.

the 2013 jury was comprised of robert greenstreet, dean of UWMSARUP; brian lee, faia, partner at skidmore, owings & merrill in chicago; david marcus, president of marcus investments in milwaukee; william menking, founder and editor-in-chief of architect’s newspaper and professor at pratt institute in new york; donna v. robertson, faia, the john and jeanne row chair at IIT college of architecture in chicago, and past-president of acsa; and mo zell, associate professor and associate dean at UWM’s architecture school.
