sou fujimoto architects designs flagship location for SUSgallery in tokyo

sou fujimoto architects has designed the flagship store of SUSgallery, a japanese tableware brand that specializes in metal products. located in minato, a special ward of tokyo, the space was designed as a museum or gallery, with floor-to-ceiling shelves displaying a variety of products. these shelves, as well as the centrally positioned counter, are reflected in the store’s mirrored ceiling, giving the illusion of a much bigger space.

the materials chosen by sou fujimoto architects for the shelves, flooring, and counters have different textures, but are unified by a monotone appearance that lets SUSgallery’s products take center stage. thanks to the architecture of the space, visitors to the location in tokyo are not only immersed the brand’s beautifully crafted tableware, but also in its proud traditions and the technology behind the products on display.

in addition to showcasing a range of items, the space can also host a variety of events and workshops. originating in tsubame, a city in japan’s niigata prefecture, SUSgallery began life in 1965 when toshio odajima began the production of metal containers. nowadays, the brand complements the advanced metalworking techniques of the area’s craftspeople with designs that cater to the needs of modern life. see other projects by sou fujimoto on designboom here, including a hotel which recently opened in the japanese city of maebashi.
