sou fujimoto to build 'pavilion by the seaside' in haikou

architects and artists including sou fujimoto, bjarke ingels, and anish kapoor have been invited to build a series of public ‘pavilions by the seaside’ in haikou — a port city and the capital of china’s island province hainan. the masterplan, located along 32 kilometers (20 miles) of coastline, aims to bring long-term and sustainable vitality to the city, enrich the local community, and attract millions of international visitors.

in 2020, the haikou tourism & culture investment holding group invited and commissioned leading architects and artists from around the world to create 16 large-scale permanent ‘pavilions by the seaside’ as part of a model for future coastal living. each pavilion has been designed to function as an independent space, hosting cultural activities and attracting urban life.

the first structure — a library designed by MAD architects — should be completed as early as spring 2021. meanwhile, new images of the contribution by japanese architect sou fujimoto have also been presented. the renderings show a circular, undulating structure with an accessible rooftop. meanwhile, a park is positioned at the pavilion’s center.

the city government of haikou appointed weng ling, founder of arts china union as lead curator, with the following architectural participants invited to contribute: bjarke ingels (BIG), kengo kuma, ong-ard satrabhandhu, patrik schumacher (zaha hadid architects), sou fujimoto, stefano boeri, thomas heatherwick, winy maas (MVRDV), liu jiakun, ma yansong (MAD), and zhu xiaodi. meanwhile, participating artists include: anish kapoor, sakamoto ryūichi, shen wei, kimsooja, lin tianmiao, xue song, yang fudong, zhang peili, and design team AHA, with support from emerging architects such as jaeho chong, li ruoxin, and liu shuo.

‘in this post-globalisation era, it is our responsibility to think about how to utilize limited resources in a more sustainable manner and reconsider our relationship with nature,’ explains project curator weng ling. ‘thanks to the support of the haikou municipal government, we are establishing an international destination for sustainable creative development, through the eyes of a group of world-renowned masters, that will shape the future of haikou city and hainan free trade port.’ all 16 pavilions expected to complete by the end of 2021.
