in continuation of the design for a new arena in san francisco for the golden state warriors basketball team, images have been released presenting an updated scheme, as conceived by  MANICA architecture with snøhetta maintaining involvement as senior design advisor. the improved plans, which are to be presented to the neighborhood’s citizens advisory committee, adjust certain compositional elements criticized in the previous iteration for visually alluding to the form of a toilet.

while initially being sited on piers 30-32 adjacent to the bay bridge overpass, the project has relocated to the city’s mission bay district. for images and information on the sports facility at its prior location, see our earlier article here.

the structure is surrounded by 3.2 acres of public plazas, and will be complemented by a 5.5 acre waterfront park across the street. while primarily serving as the warriors’ home court, the sports center will also host concerts, conventions, and other entertainment events. the facility’s arena is planned to contain 18,064 seats, and will be complemented by 100,000 square feet of retail and eating spaces. the scheme also includes a large amount of ‘office/biotech/lab’ area.
