snøhetta realized ‘gapahuk’ as a socially-oriented cabin with priority given to its common areas. the name gapahuk derives from norwegian as a simple wooden structure, and this was interpreted by the architects throughout the cabin’s development. the spacious patios, and focus on the outdoors areas, encourage the inhabitants to socialize and spend time together. inside, three bedrooms, a bathroom, and storage spaces are kept moderate in size and allow the architectural footprint to be kept to a minimum.

the twisted and folded roof canopy not only gives the cabin a sculptural character, but also provides protection against all weather conditions. the angled surfaces can also be used for energy production by placing solar panels on them, making it possible to operate the cabin ‘off grid’.

large openings — specifically in the common areas — frame the outside environment, allowing residents to soak up the natural surroundings. the oversized roof overhangs to form a sheltered patio near the entrance, which is entirely made from timber, the primary material of the whole project.
