new images and further details of a shigeru ban-designed project dubbed ‘the world’s tallest hybrid timber structure’ have been released. the residential tower, titled ‘terrace house’, was first unveiled earlier this year, and will form the japanese architect’s first project in canada. planned for vancouver’s coal harbour neighborhood, the project will be constructed next to the listed ‘evergreen building’, designed by the late arthur erickson.

backed by development firm portliving, terrace house comprises just 20 residences, which have all be designed by shigeru ban himself. each unit offers sweeping skyline views, while external terraces — landscaped by cornelia oberlander — provide outdoor spaces off the living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms in most residences. terraces are finished with ambient lighting and porcelain tiles that match the interior white oak wood flooring. meanwhile, floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors facilitate indoor and outdoor living.

designed to maximize both privacy and exclusivity, almost half of the homes occupy entire floor plates, with a vertical orientation allowing for only three homes to occupy the top seven floors of the building. the homes within the upper timber levels feature vertical and horizontal wood structural beams and columns with integrated acoustic channels that absorb sound and add warmth to the living areas. homes are encased in low-emissivity glass and feature ‘winter gardens’ — large enclosed terraces equipped with electronic, motorized glass-sliding panels.

‘the residences each have a full suite of smart home technologies, museum-quality glazing that helps to control temperature and provides UV protection for art collections, and fully-integrated air conditioning and heating systems paired with in-floor radiant heating and cooling that extend onto enclosed balconies, creating comfort and maximizing use of indoor/outdoor living spaces all year-round,’ says macario (tobi) reyes, founder and CEO of portliving. ‘to further enhance the ownership experience, residents will enjoy a dedicated concierge team, and a plethora of amenities ensuring a best in class lifestyle.’ prices for the 20 residences start at $3 million CAD ($2.3m USD).
