shigeru ban constructs temporary pavilion for kyoto photography festival

in central kyoto, japanese architect shigeru ban has designed a paper tube pavilion to host a temporary photography exhibition. the structure, built adjacent to kyoto’s city hall, comprises 27 columns made of paper tubes, and is topped with translucent plastic roof panels. internally, visitors move through a sequence of intimate gallery spaces which display the work of german missionary and photographer martin gusinde.

 

the pavilion was built by volunteers from the nearby kyoto university of art and design and was completed for the kyotographie international photo festival.
