Infinite Maldives by Shigeru Ban
Shigeru Ban Architects has revealed plans for Infinite Maldives, the first resort-residence development in the Maldives. The project, covering 5 hectares on Male Atoll 1 island, features 44 overwater and beachfront villas designed by Shigeru Ban in partnership with Crystal Property Group. Infinite Maldives aims to incorporate Maldivian elements and sustainable practices, utilizing local materials and emphasizing biophilic design. Each villa incorporates private infinity pools and access to amenities such as a fitness center, spa, and wellness facilities. The landscaping, inspired by Sri Lankan gardens, is designed by Michel Desvigne to create a cohesive environment.‘What makes Infinite Maldives unique is that the resort blends in with the sea and the green nature in an ‘infinite’ manner.’

A Fusion of Luxury and Environmental Sensibility
Infinite Maldives represents a blend of luxury and environmental consciousness, offering a unique living experience in this tropical paradise. Shigeru Ban Architects (see more here) prioritized the integration of buildings with the natural landscape. Ban mentioned, ‘Our approach focused on the landscape design first, ensuring a seamless connection between water, land, and vegetation, promoting continuity between indoor and outdoor spaces.’ The project emphasizes sustainability through prefabrication methods and lightweight, and recycled materials. The architect highlighted the aim to create a place where residents can relax in harmony with the environment, rather than just promoting sustainability as a label. Reza Magdon Ismail, CEO of Crystal Property Group (see more here), emphasized the project’s significance: ‘We are proud to be delivering the first resort-residence and one-of-a-kind opportunity in the Maldives, which is a huge milestone for the country and a great achievement for us. We share the same ethos and ambition to create extraordinary living spaces that harmonize with the environment they sit in and align with the overall spirit of the Maldives.’
