movable display racks allow multiple configurations in this apparel showroom in tokyo

japan-based design studio SESN/kiyoshi miyagawa has completed the design of ‘MOONRAKERS’, an apparel showroom in the buzzing area of nihonbashi, tokyo. the design features movable racks that store the display items, allowing the space to be more flexible.

SESN/kiyoshi miyagawa divided the plan into left and right sides of the site, where exactly half of the plan was used as a movable rack and stock to make the most of the depth. the racks are fixed on a metal floor rail, and with the help of wheels, they slide along the rails. on the ceiling, a series of linear lighting is aligned with the floor rails dividing the space and giving it continuous rhythm.

by using the rack as a stock, customers can check the size variation by pulling it out, creating an interaction between the client and the brand. when the showroom is closed, the racks can also be pulled out in a way to display the items for passers to see. the designers used a neutral color palette with different materials such as ready-made racks and rattan, gutter lids, and brass. the combination of these materials with the sliding racks gives the space a flexible and contemporary feel.
