‘buddy’s house’ is a single family residence designed by the ukranian-based studio of sergey makhno architects and is located on a 12-acre plot of land in a quite neighborhood in the kyiv region.  the design can characterized by its masterful incorporation of the various materials that define each surface of the home and separate guest house that can be used as an additional living quarters or recreation space. the stacking of orthogonal volumes outline a sobering grid of clean and powerful lines framing large planes of glass that extend views out onto the yard and allow plenty of natural light to flood the interior.  exposed concrete forms the base of the structure interrupted by a wrapping band of black brick that meanders its way from the front entrance to the rear. the tallest element in the design is a belt-like folding plane flanking both sides of the house that frames two walls made up of tree trunks cut up into sections, forming a timber collage that offsets the colder materials and dark bold colors.

makhno‘s interior is a continuation of the exterior in terms of form and design approach. earth-toned muted colors create a comfortable atmosphere emphasize by the platonic volumes that make up the spaces. the ground floor contains the social living spaces as well as a library and guest bedroom, all of which accessible to the several exterior courtyards and back yard. a central wood-burning fireplace fills its role as hearth, used to heat the entire level. upstairs, three bedrooms enjoy views of the surrounding area through large windows that make up almost the entirety of the walls. custom furniture made by local craftsman and the house’s strong connection to the exterior strongly ground the design and feel to its site and its culture.
