Istanbul House K’s revamped interior balances black and white

Habif Mimarlık Architects takes over the renovation project of the roof-apartment duplex ‘House K’ located on a sloping site in Istanbul overlooking the Bosphorus. The design team restores all infrastructure systems of the construction to respond to today’s living needs, preserving the building’s historic value and transforming it with a modern new interior. The design features wooden and marble materiality, as well as black and white colors decorating the space, establishing a strong connection between old and new, light and dark. The total plan area splits between a regular floor and an attic interlinked with a sculptural reflective staircase.

A sculptural reflective staircase links the first level to the attic

The ground floor plans an open layout that flows from the entrance of the house towards the view on the front facade. The common areas of the living and dining rooms as well as the lounge and fireplace are all positioned in direct contact with each other and the windows receiving plenty of natural light. The public zones connect with the attic and the private functions through a sculptural staircase. The loft floor arranges a master suite with a bedroom, a bathroom, and a dressing room alongside the outdoor space by a terrace. The design team takes advantage of the roof pitch by innovatively using the space as a walk-in dressing area. The house assembles a spacious, view-oriented background intended to serve as a gallery for the residents’ artworks. Wood and marble shape various sculptural architectural elements in the residence, and along with circular features and rounded corners add to the decoration that supports the flowing plan. Gray top-toned wood herringbone parquet, wide white walls, and black and white hues adorn the interior that showcases lighting installations, artworks, and sculptural furniture.
