in the picturesque mountainous landscape of the swiss alps, the ‘chalet val d’herens’ designed by swiss studio savioz fabrizzi architectes sits perched on the side of a mountain, enjoying uninhibited views of the valley. the footprint of the home is determined by the surrounding landscape sculpting a multi-faceted envelope framing the various surrounding view points.

windows of different sizes around the concrete and wood-clad structure correspond to the inner program and exterior conditions. the interior is organized around a central concrete stairwell core that is present throughout all four stories of the home. each floor slab is cast around this core with openings that visually connect each level. the sobering concrete forms of the foundation are offset by exterior timber cladding recalling the local barn construction in the area while interior wooden walls in the upper levels provide a warmer environment for the private areas.
