The Créateurs Design Awards has selected Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa from SANAA as the recipients of the 2025 Le Prix Charlotte Perriand. Founding partners of the internationally renowned architecture firm SANAA, the Japanese duo has been at the forefront of architectural innovation, celebrated for their minimalist yet profound designs that blend form, function, and environment. Their work has consistently pushed the boundaries of contemporary architecture, earning them global recognition and accolades, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2010. ‘It is a great honor to receive an award that bears such a great name. the 30-year legacy of Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa

Established in 1995 in Tokyo, Japan, the SANAA team has completed an array of iconic works, including the Toledo Museum of Art’s glass pavilion in Toledo, Ohio; the new Museum of Contemporary Art in New York; the Rolex Learning Center at the EPFL in Lausanne; the Serpentine Pavilion in London; the Christian Dior Building in Omotesandō, Tokyo; the 21st-century Museum of Contemporary Art in Kanazawa; the Louvre-Lens Museum in France; and the new Bocconi campus in Milan, Italy. A more recent project by architects Kazuyo Sejima and Ryue Nishizawa include Better Co-being, is an experiential pavilion that will soon take shape at Expo 2025 Osaka. Envisioned in a corner of the ‘Forest of Tranquility’ in the center of the festival site, the proposal falls under the thematic project, Resonance of Lives, which highlights the importance of co-creating a new world — one that respects all forms of life and prepares us for a future where every one them can prosper.

Leaping to Australia, the SANAA team completed a new structure as part of an expansion initiative for the Art Gallery of New South Wales (NSW) in Sydney. The building reveals a cluster of rectangular pavilions that overlap each other while keeping in harmony with its surroundings. It provides different types of spaces for new art forms. Among these, guests can find the Tank, an adaptive repurposing of a 2,200 sqm World War II fuel bunker, a 1,100 sqm column-free contemporary art gallery, and a time-based art gallery. Other features include three limestone-clad art pavilions that slope gently down to the harbor, 250 m of rammed earth walls on two levels, and a double-height atrium in the center of the building that is over 11 meters tall at its highest point. Both the interior and exterior of the new building flow into accessible ‘art terraces’ and courtyards.
