SALT Architects expands Calling Academy Stellenbosch
SALT Architects takes over the design of the new section of Calling Academy Stellenbosch, reflecting a meticulous approach to enhancing functionality and improving space quality in line with the Calling Education non-profit organization’s mission of offering affordable, high-quality education in South Africa.
The expansion seamlessly integrates contextual forms and materials, introducing various flexible functions under a continuous tiled roof without altering the school‘s original structure. The design adapts organically to evolving accommodation demands and financial constraints, maximizing the learning environment’s quality connected to the natural beauty of the site while prioritizing cost efficiency. The project includes a laboratory, staff room, offices, classroom, and counseling room, arranged to create a renewed image without structural modifications to the original school. Concrete-block screen walls and extended roof overhangs allow internal spaces to flow, establishing thresholds between interior and exterior.

The addition is strategically placed between the existing school building and sports field, functioning as a pavilion overlooking the surroundings. The widened roofed terrace on the south side serves as assembly, spectator, or overflow space for adjacent rooms. It also operates as a community event space for public rental, contributing to the Calling Education organization’s income. Natural light optimization is a key aspect, with features like skylights made of polycarbonate tiles. The design team at SALT Architects opts for thoughtful material choices throughout the design, including OSB board ceilings. The design fosters outdoor spaces for learners, utilizing locally manufactured and recycled materials to maintain cost-effectiveness. The overall project reflects a commitment to providing top-quality education efficiently while engaging with the community and addressing environmental considerations.
