pulsa by Aedas reflects the sea with undulating curves of shimmering glass

pulsa, the expressive new residential development by Aedas, is anchored into the forested hillside overlooking the rippling waterfront of hong kong’s repulse bay. comprising a highly sculptural collection of volumes, all eight units enjoy a sweeping view of one of the city’s most famous beaches. director cary lau of Aedas, taking influence from the dynamic fluidity of the sea, integrates undulating curves of shimmering glass to generate panoramic and ever-changing perspectives outward. the cascading organization of the volumes along the slope not only prevents visual obstruction, but serves to minimize the project’s impact on the natural landscape.

pulsa by Aedas is situated on a plot with both a dramatic slope and an irregular boundary. the design team optimized the challenging site by dividing the development into clustered units organized in two cascading rows. three housing units in the front row are built downwards while five in the rear are built on elevated foundations. while the team ensured a sculptural identity and a preservation of views to the bay, rewarded efforts were paid toward creating an energy-saving architecture with careful consideration for environmentally sensitive materials and processes as well as a reduction of potential impact on the landscape during construction.

project leader cary lau of Aedas prioritized the minimization of the development’s carbon footprint. the project achieved BEAM plus GOLD for its environmentally sustainable design and selection of materials. low-E coatings not only control glare, but further reduce heat transfer across building envelopes. the design applies cross-ventilation to enhance thermal comfort while outdoor rooftop swimming pools are set into a raised roof system, enabling an effective energy-saving architecture. cary lau comments: ‘integrating nature into architecture is just the beginning. we should focus on its long term impact, to make our design meaningful.’
