portuguese holiday home by prod architecture comprises four gabled volumes

in the north of portugal, local practice prod architecture & design has completed a holiday home for a family of four. led by paulo lago de carvalho and susana lages correia, the design team arranged three gabled dwellings with similar dimensions around a central core, with a further volume rotated to match the direction of a neighboring building.

the modest dimensions of the existing building determined the scale of the project, while the layout was influenced by its vernacular identity. the interstitial space at the center of the scheme is covered by a flat transparent roof and full size windows, which provides external views of the surrounding landscape.

internal accommodation is spread across three storeys, with a garage, wine cellar and laundry room found at basement level. above, the primary floor includes cooking and dining space alongside the dwelling’s sleeping quarters. above the living room is a mezzanine level that contains a small and tranquil study. in terms of materials, the combination of local granite, patinated pine boards on the walls and zinc on the roof lend the project a sense of homogeneity despite the combination of different tones and textures.
