RAD+ar plants Tanatap Wall Garden amongst existing trees

Tanatap Wall Garden, conceived by RAD+ar, explores the evolving role of walls in contemporary architecture, focusing on their aesthetic and functional aspects. The project examines how walls can shape spaces and integrate with the natural environment in Semarang. The design begins with a simple question: Can a commercial space be created using only the essence of basic architecture, such as walls? Three distinct walls, varying in height, were strategically placed amidst lush existing trees, creating a playful interplay with the surroundings.

The design of the coffee garden blurs the boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces by connecting areas like the reflection entrance, backyard, and creative amphitheater through existing trees. The absence of hierarchy allows seamless visual connections from the facade to the amphitheater and garden backyard, harmonizing with the dancing structural walls.

Tanatap coffee garden serves as a public living room

The architecture aims to establish a genuine connection between the interior and exterior environments, prioritizing comfort and unique design. By achieving this integration, the design seeks to meet the expectations of modern guests who value nature as part of their experience. Tanatap Wall Garden celebrates its openness, contributing positively to the urban landscape. With features like an 800 sqm water catchment area and low-energy indoor spaces, the design embraces sustainability and self-sufficiency.

Transforming an old parking space into a vibrant commercial garden, the project demonstrates the feasibility of passive low-energy design in tropical settings. It combines ecological principles, comfort, and post-modern aesthetics to create a space that invites people to connect with nature and artistic expression.

Initiated by architect Antonius Richard, Tanatap coffee garden will serve as a public living room for the locals providing a dynamic destination for music and performance enthusiasts.
