2014 rolex architecture mentor peter zumthor selects finalists

peter zumthor, 2014 architecture mentor of the rolex mentor and protégé arts initiative has selected four finalists to be considered for a year-long creative exchange. over the course of the twelve months, zumthor will work closely with the chosen candidate on a one-to-one collaboration, guiding him/her through a creative process, working towards a final body of work.

the 2014 rolex architecture candidates are:
amritha ballal, 33, india; orlando garcia, 38, colombia/united states; gloria maría cabral insaurralde, 31, paraguay; and hiba shahzada, 29, jordan.

outside of architect, the rolex mentor and protégé arts initiative also offers creative guidance in the categories of: dance, film, literature, music, theatre and visual theatre; whose 2014 mentors are alexei ratmansky, alejandro gonzález iñárritu, michael ondaatje, kaija saariaho, jennifer tipton and olafur eliasson, respectively.

fellipe barbosa, 33, brazil; denes nagy, 33, hungary; and tom shoval, 32, israel.

literature: mentor michael ondaatje
neal hovelmeier, 35, zimbabwe; togara muzanenhamo, 38, zimbabwe; chinelo okparanta, 32, nigeria/united states; and miroslav penkov, 31, bulgaria/united states.

music: mentor kaija saariaho
felipe lara, 34, brazil/united states; vasco mendonça, 36, portugal; and anna thorvaldsdottir, 36, iceland.

theatre: mentor jennifer tipton

the seven protégés that are selected from these finalists will be announced in may 2014.

about the rolex mentor and protégé arts initiative

each cycle starts with the appointment of nominating panels in each artistic discipline, which are comprised of independent, anonymous artists and arts leaders who tap into their network of contacts to find and nominate the most promising potential protégés from around the world. application is by invitation only and finalists are selected through a rigorous examination process. rolex then arranges for the mentors to meet the finalists in their disciplines and choose protégés.

no restrictions are placed on the mentors and protégés – apart from the length of time they must work together (a minimum of six weeks) – and they are free to establish the most effective way of working together during their 12-month mentoring period, which runs from june 2014 to june 2015. the mentors and protégés will share highlights from their year together with the public in autumn 2015.
