peter pichler's hotel milla montis nods to agricultural context with abstracted, figural facade

peter pichler architecture realizes its competition-winning hotel ‘milla montis’ among the rolling tyrolean landscape of northern italy. the hotel overlooks the meadows and fields surrounding the small alpine village of maranza, a tourist destination known for its unique scenery and impressive panoramic views of the dolomite mountains. the project is fragmented into four shifted volumes to break down the scale of the entire structure while at the same time respecting the scale of the surrounding buildings. the composition is inspired by the vernacular architecture of the region and the classic wooden barn, introducing a contemporary reinterpretation of this typology.

in designing the curving, figural elements of hotel milla montis‘ exoskeleton facade, peter pichler architecture takes influence from the pitchforks of local farmers. this detail recalls the heritage of the small village of maranza and its significant agricultural background.

the hotel’s interiors are simple and functional, a timeless alpine style. ash wood is combined with typical green loden textiles, adding a moment of color and offering continuity to the natural palette of the surrounding landscape. timber is the main protagonist of the project, both outside and inside, creating contrast with the exterior blackened wood and the interior lightwood.
